Controllable single-photon emitters are important building blocks for scalable quantum photonic technologies. Beyond the generation of nonclassical light, the ability to define where photons are generated and to control their optical properties is increasingly important for the development of integrated and reconfigurable quantum light sources.
Here, we demonstrate a controllable single-photon emitter platform based on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Using local atomic force microscopy (AFM) processing, single-photon emitters are created at predefined positions, providing spatial addressability of the quantum light sources. In the same multilayer hBN platform, switchable ferroelectric polarization
provides a post-fabrication means of controlling the optical response of the emitters. Reversal of the ferroelectric state induces reversible changes in both the emission wavelength and polarization, and the corresponding optical response can be recovered upon switching the ferroelectric polarization back to its previous state. Importantly, these changes remain
observable after removal of the external bias, demonstrating nonvolatile control of the emitter response. By combining position-defined single-photon generation with reversible and nonvolatile spectral and polarization tuning, this work provides a pathway toward spatially addressable and reconfigurable quantum light sources for future scalable quantum photonic systems.
