Physics Department Required Courses — Registration, Retaking, and Summer Course Regulations
[Physics Required Course Registration Important Notes]
1. For all undergraduate required major courses, class rosters are automatically imported by the university system based on student year levels. Students are strongly advised not to drop these courses arbitrarily to avoid having to compete for seats with lowerclassmen in the future.
2. Freshmen: Required major courses must be taken from those offered by the Department of Physics; taking courses offered by other departments for credit substitution is NOT permitted. (According to Article 4 of the NCKU Course Enrollment Regulations: Required courses for first-year undergraduate students may not be substituted with same-named courses offered by other departments unless approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs). (Department transfer and university transfer students are exempt from this restriction.)
[Required Physics Course Retake Regulations]
In principle, Physics students CANNOT retake required courses in other departments. Course retakes in other departments are only open to graduating seniors and students extending their study period, subject to the following regulations:
Students must have taken the required major course taught by Physics Department faculty twice without passing, and must obtain prior department approval before enrolling in a required course in another department that has identical course titles, content, credits, and instruction language to substitute for the required course in our department.
[Retake Regulations for Required General Chemistry (I)(II) and Calculus (I)(II) (Revised Announcement Date: 2022.06.07)]
(Applicable to students admitted in/before AY 2021 and in/after AY 2022, per the resolution of the Physics Department Curriculum Committee on 2022.03.23)
Original Regulation: For General Chemistry (I)(II) and Calculus (I)(II), students must have taken the course during regular semesters in our department 【2 times】 without passing before they could take courses in other departments with identical title, content, and credits to substitute for our department's required General Chemistry (I)(II), General Chemistry Lab (I)(II), and Calculus (I)(II).
Revised Regulation: For General Chemistry (I)(II) and Calculus (I)(II), students who have taken the course during regular semesters in our department 【1 time】 without passing may, starting from their second attempt, take courses in other departments with identical title, content, and credits to substitute for our department's required General Chemistry (I)(II), General Chemistry Lab (I)(II), and Calculus (I)(II).
** Please Note — Definition of "Taking Courses in Regular Semesters":
Having officially registered and taken the course during the Fall or Spring semester of an academic year according to university enrollment procedures, but failed to pass. Under this condition, taking the required General Chemistry (I)(II), General Chemistry Lab (I)(II), and Calculus (I)(II) in other departments is permitted starting from the second attempt.
[Required Physics Course Summer Session Regulations]:
1. For foundational required summer courses (Required: General Chemistry, General Chemistry Lab, Calculus), if taking <Distance/Digital Courses> offered in the NCKU Summer Session system, students must have taken the course during regular semesters and failed at least once before being permitted to enroll in the distance learning course on their second attempt.
2. Except for General Chemistry and Calculus, summer session credits for required courses are, in principle, only recognized if the course is offered by our department.
3. Any student lacking non-major required credits (e.g., General Education, Service Learning) that affect their graduation eligibility may apply for summer session courses in accordance with university regulations.
4. Non-graduating students, except for General Chemistry, General Chemistry Lab, and Calculus, must have taken other required major courses during regular semesters twice without passing before applying for summer sessions.
5. ONLY graduating seniors and students extending their study period may apply for inter-collegiate summer sessions at other universities for required major courses in accordance with university regulations.
Summer session regulations: Subject to official university announcements
